General Finishes High Performance Dead Flat Topcoat High Performance Top Coat is the hardest, most durable consumer polyurethane top coat on the market today. It contains all the consumer friendly characteristics of a Polyacrylic Blend. In addition it contains a UV Stabilizer to protect it from breaking down in sunlight and to protect the underlying stains from fading. With its pure polyurethane durability, it can even be used on floors.

This is a revolutionary product in regards it can be used over dark colors, like black and not dry with a white haze!!!   This is because traditionally, flat topcoats were created by adding matting agents to gloss topcoat. These agents decreased the durability of the topcoat and produced a slight haze that reduced the vibrancy of an underlying stain or paint. When used over dark colors like black or navy, this "haze" appeared as white.

Using newly patented polymer resin technology, matting agents are no longer required.  Our new Dead Flat topcoats produce a brilliant clear finish while providing significant improvements to chemical, water and mar resistance.

COVERAGE: 125-150 SQUARE FEET

NOT IDEAL OVER "white" paint...General Finishes states it can potentially yellow. General Finishes issued a press release stating that their Top Coats were not recommended on white paint due to the unsatisfactory degree of yellowing. Any polycrylic will also turn amber over time. If looking for a top coat to go over Annie Sloan CHALK PAINT- consider Annie Sloan's waxes. Once cured, Annie Sloan’s Wax is incredibly durable. It’s also sustainable in that it can be touched up without repainting the entire piece. * Apply very thin!* General Finishes High Performance Polyurethane water based finishes are designed to be the best. They are formulated to resist foaming, prevent sagging and resist running like ordinary water based finishes. Tack free dry time is only 15 minutes with 2-4 hours between coats, which means you can finish a project in short order. HP (High Performance) also contains UV stabilizers which makes it suitable for the most demanding applications, including countertops and floors. For interior use only. Applying this top coat over a large flat surface like a table top? General Finishes recommends using a 6" Painter Pad with a "stocking footie" over it to apply your High Performance Top Coat. We sell the pads HERE => http://shop.thepurplepaintedlady.com/Warners-6-Multi-Painter-Pad_p_408.html

APPLYING OVER GEL STAIN?: High Performance Top Coats go great over the Gel Stains we offer! When using Gel Stain's- LIKE A STAIN- (normal application, wiping the Gel back off).....where you can wood grain showing through the finished piece- follow the wait and cure time noted on the container- which is waiting at least 48-72 hours. BUT- if using the Gel Stain for fuller coverage, like a paint- THEN the waiting time between the last application of Gel Stain and your first application of a High Performance Top Coat, should be longer. That wait time is dramatically increased if the Gel is “painted on.” It can sometimes take up to a week for the Gel to “off-gas” and dry when it is applied using the ‘painted on” method. Remember to gently stir product before using. The flattening agent often settles on the bottom. Do not shake since you do not want to create bubbles. When apply the top coat - do not play with it once on. Try to minimize "back brushing" since this can cause the top coat to have flashing. Top coats behave differently than paint- so remember to respect that. High Performance Top Coats go great over the Gel Stains we offer! This can be used over Chalk Paint®. Some customers water the General Finishes HP Topcoat down. A good ratio to reference is 1/3 water to 2/3 topcoat. I know of some who have even done as much half and half. The reason for watering the top coat- is so that the topcoat will soak into the chalk paint® and not sit on the surface. It bonds with the paint. It is suggested to do two coats of this so that the Chalk Paint® is sealed enough, then you can use a General Finishes glaze. If using a glaze and doing multiple coat- it is suggested to put a coat of HP Topcoat in between layers of glazes also. That way if you do not like your results, you can wipe off with water and start again and the previous finish is not messed up. By watering the top coat slightly- It just flows better and gives a better looking finish...with no brush marks. If wanting more of a sheen- always use a brush, applying in the same direction and do not thin your last few coats as much.
